Bare Medicine

About Us

Dr Kristen McElveen graduated from Portland's National College of Natural Medicine in June 2007. After taking her board exams in August 2007, she found out she was chosen for a first-year residency at the college, which was her first choice for her career post-education! She now practices at the various NCNM clinics around town on both teaching and private shifts and is currently fulfilling her second year as an NCNM resident.

Mission Statement

I vow to educate people to whole health and well-being using any naturopathic modality that fits their needs and lifestyles. Through speaking, teaching, volunteering and setting an example in my community, I will do my best to provide the resource for wellness to all populations.

Our Business

Bare Medicine was a name I thought of when I first entered medical school in 2002. I knew that was the name for my practice! Right now, my practice involves being a first-year resident at NCNM, where I work on several teaching shifts and private shifts.

Teaching shifts are shifts where I work either with an attending physician or with a first-year resident supervising several students from NCNM who perform most of the visit with the patients. The students then present each case to me in order to make sure they are on the right track with both diagnostic and treatment options. If you visit me on a teaching shift, you will be seen by NCNM students primarily, and I will check in with you and oversee your treatment.

Private shifts do not include any students. If you visit me on one of my private shifts, you will only be seen and treated by me at the Natural Health Center.

Billing - All billing issues are to be addressed with the Natural Health Center. There are different charges for teaching shifts and private shifts, and I am now able to  accept insurance on my private shift. Please contact NHC at 503-552-1551 regarding your options for payment, and possibility of applying for a sliding-scale fee adjustment based on your income, if needed. If you do qualify for "low-income," our community clinics may be the right choice for you. These are all teaching shifts at various locations around the Portland Metro area, and visit fees are $20 per visit, with significant discounts on supplements and labs.

Who is Dr McElveen?

Dr McElveen grew up in Clearwater, FL, far away from the lifestyle of natural medicine. She was always drawn to medicine, but nothing really felt right. After graduating cum laude from Countryside High School, she tried several different majors in undergraduate college - psychology, computer science, even music. Finally, she took a break and traveled around the country, settling in Port Townsend, WA. It was here that she found out about naturopathic medicine while doing computer work for a local naturopath. This inspired her to go back to undergraduate school, this time in Atlanta, GA, and get her biology degree, fulfilling all of her prerequisites for naturopathic medical school. In September of 2002, she began her tenure at NCNM.
